Celebrating the Season with a Community Tree Lighting

Working in public relations, we have the opportunity to attend many events, particularly during the holiday season.

There are industry events, client events, media events, family events, nonprofit events and community events. You get the idea. There are a lot of events.

Sometimes an event comes along that is extra special. It exceeds your expectations and leaves you feeling glad you were there. I got to attend one such event last week.

On #GivingTuesday, ECPR worked with our client, United Way for Greater Austin, on a community tree lighting event for the St. John’s neighborhood—an underserved area of northeast Austin—at Webb Middle School.

St. John’s isn’t an area that would typically get an event like this, which was complete with a huge holiday tree, music, hot chocolate and cookies, 1,600 donated books and stuffed animals for children to keep, face painting and miniature ponies.

Further, the folks who live here often have transportation challenges that might prevent them from attending a tree lighting in another part of town.

I spent some time during the event with a little boy who took great care in selecting books for himself and his siblings. Clearly this does not happen a lot in his home.

Please take a moment to watch a video of this special event:
