What began as a social and political movement spurred by labor movements in the early twentieth century has become a day of celebration and empowerment for women.
Since 1975 the United Nations has recognized International Women’s Day on March 8 to bring light to women’s rights and equality. This year’s theme is “Empowering Women, Empowering Humanity: Picture it!”
We know this concept well at Elizabeth Christian Public Relations—our fearless leader, Elizabeth Christian, urges women to have confidence, lean in to their careers and build their skill toolboxes.
This type of empowerment is key to women’s success, and it seems that the world is beginning to understand that. World leaders, like the UN, as well as celebrities such as Emma Watson, Steve Carrell and Eddie Redmayne have embraced the idea of a world where every woman is empowered to make her own decisions.
In the past, International Women’s Day was observed on days when major women’s protests had taken place, like the 1917 “Bread and Peace” protest in Russia, and the 1911 movement in Denmark to demand women’s suffrage. Today, a strong social media campaign is just as instrumental on making this cause take flight, as seen with Watson’s #HeforShe initiative.
After speaking at the UN last year on behalf of women’s rights, Watson has championed women’s rights in the eyes of Hollywood, and will now host a conversation regarding gender equality on March 8 at 1 p.m. The event will also be livestreamed on Facebook for those who can’t attend.
This kind of attention to women’s empowerment is exactly what we at ECPR advocate for on a daily basis—in subtle ways. We encourage you to do the same by being
- strong in your careers,
- bold in your decisions, and
- confident in yourselves
Happy International Women’s Day!
